From the mind of Woody Allen comes Mighty Aphrodite, a classic comedy released in the mid-’90s. Written, directed by, and starring Woody Allen, the film boasts a stellar cast that includes Mira Sorvino, Helena Bonham Carter, Peter Weller, and Michael Rapaport.

The story begins at an open-air theater in Taormina, Sicily, where a Greek chorus of men and women in costume sets the proverbial stage for the plot. They narrate the tale of a childless but happily married couple in Manhattan: Lenny (Allen), a sports journalist, and Amanda (Carter), a museum manager. The chorus ominously warns of the pathos that will befall these seemingly fortunate individuals.

Amanda and her parents persuade a hesitant Lenny to adopt a child. The couple adopts a baby boy, Max, and as he grows up, Lenny becomes a devoted father. He is convinced that Max is extraordinarily gifted and precocious.

Intrigued by Max’s abilities, Lenny sets out to uncover the identity of the boy’s biological mother. Despite repeated warnings from the Greek chorus—who occasionally break the fourth wall and interact with Lenny—he is undeterred in his quest. Eventually, Lenny discovers Max’s mother, Leslie (Sorvino).

Unbeknownst to Amanda, Lenny develops a platonic relationship with Leslie, a kind-hearted but naïve woman working as a prostitute and former adult film actress. Determined to improve Leslie’s life, Lenny tries to free her from the control of her pimp and attempts to set her up with Kevin (Rapaport), a young amateur boxer. However, fate intervenes, and events take an unexpected turn, leading to surprising outcomes for everyone involved.

As with many of Allen’s films, Mighty Aphrodite features a captivating screenplay and a standout cast. Without giving away too many spoilers, the Greek tragedy-style ending predicted by the chorus never materializes. Instead, the movie concludes with an offbeat, satisfying twist characteristic of Allen’s work.

Mighty Aphrodite is a delightful comedy filled with relatable characters and sharp humor, solidifying its place among Allen’s best films. Mira Sorvino shines as Leslie, portraying an innocent young woman trapped by her circumstances. Her performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Allen, as Lenny, reprises his signature role as the neurotic, obsessive protagonist with great success.

This lighthearted comedy garnered critical acclaim and audience admiration for good reason. If you’re in the mood for an entertaining and thought-provoking film, Mighty Aphrodite is well worth a watch.
