In the podcast series Ultra, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow detailed a little known chapter in our History that posed a grave danger to the very existence of our nation as a Democracy. In this installment, she returns with another chapter of History where the bedrock of our nation was shaken by dark forces within.
The dark forces within waged this war against our democracy on two fronts, one headed by an elusive criminal who acted within the shadows and another who operated, in plain site, a demagogue in our Senate, capacity with the power, tenacity and influence to pull off this ambitious and devastating plan.
The tale begins with Dr. Lester Hunt, a dentist in a small town in Wyoming who goes on to become governor of that state and subsequently become a senator. His story will not however have a fairy tale ending. Hunt, unable to handle the political pressure thrust upon him, by the powerful demagogue would go on to take his own life in the mid 1950s.
The story then shifts to a young private in the US army, Francis Yaki, who goes rogue. Yaki becomes a mole and champions the cause of Nazi War criminals who decimated an entire American war unit in Malmedy, a town in Belgium during World War II. The US government is also seeking Yaki for his involvement in trying to sell the Cobalt bomb a doomsday weapon on the black market.
Yaki is also involved in Operation Pistorius, a master plan to bring Nazi terrorists onto the US to cause destruction on American soil. As the US government is seeking Yaki, he would resurface again. Actually he would be hiding in plain sight, aiding in the rise one of the most extreme right wing politicians in American politics, Senator Joseph McCarthy.
Ultra2 covers McCarthy’s misdeeds, as he rises to gain more and more power in the Senate. He would be pivotal in causing Hunt to commit suicide, using the most ruthless methods possible, including blackmail and strong arming. The podcast finally ends with McCarthy’s downfall and Yockey’s. capture.
Nobody does History as Rachel Maddow. Much like her other podcasts, reviewed earlier, ‘Ultra Season 2’ takes a look at our past History and serves as an ominous warning for the dire consequences of ignoring it.
