Texas State Capitol Building
The Capitol building, the seat of the Texas State government, is a majestic building with captivating architecture situated in Downtown Austin. It houses the offices of the Texas legislature and the governor of Texas. It is the sixth-largest State Capitol and larger than the US Capitol in DC.
Built in 1876, with Italian Renaissance-style architecture, it has an interesting history in that it was built thanks to a barter transaction between the builders, John and Charles Farrell (Capital Syndicate), and the state government.
The brothers were paid with more than three million acres of land for the construction. In 1983, a fire destroyed the apartment of William Hobby, then the state’s Lt. Governor, and came dangerously close to the Capitol. The government used the incident to rebuild the Capitol.
The venue is admission-free and open until 6 pm in the evening and is worth the visit if you are in the area.
