The Girl Hunters is a Film Noir, featuring the hard boiled private eye, Michael Hammer. It is based on a pulp novel of the same name, written by Mickey Spillane. The part of Hammer is played by the man himself, Mickey Spillane.

The plot begins with two cops finding a drunk and passed-out Hammer ,on an alley. He is taken to the station where he is accosted and violently slugged by his former friend, Capt. Pat Chambers. Chambers forces Mike to talk to Richie Cole, a sailor who has been shot and is on his deathbed. Pat wants Mike to talk to Cole for the reason that he, Cole and a senator have been shot by bullets from the same gun.

Mike talks to Pat and soon realizes that Pat has information about Mike’s missing secretary and lover, Velda. It is revealed that Pat, who also nurses an affection for Velda, blames Mike for Velda’s disappearance.

Mike’s investigation will lead him to Laura Knapp, the dead senator’s beautiful, blonde and mysterious widow.

As Mike plunges into a case, he realizes that a killer named the Dragon is on Velda’s trail. The rest of the plot is about how Mike finds and confronts the dragon and then unlocking the truth behind Laura.

So, the obvious question here is, whether Mike finds Velda? Unfortunately, the director, Mike and Spillane seem to have forgotten about her. Even when the climax is over, the is no mention of Velda and the viewer is left speculating if Velda is dead or alive.

Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, Mickey Spillane cannot seem to get into the shoes of his own creation, Mike Hammer. His dialog delivery and acting skills have a great distance to go to catch up with his acting skills. The plot is far-fetched. The climax is predictable(except for the missing Velda part.) Feel free to skip this one.
